Shanghai Chongming Xuegong Scenic Area

Chongming Xuegong is one of the three remaining Confucian temples in Shanghai today and is also the largest Confucian temple in terms of area in the Shanghai region. It is now a cultural heritage protection unit and a patriotic education base in Shanghai. In 2017, Chongming Xuegong was listed as one of the 100 local cultural symbols in Shanghai, and it is the only selected building with symbolic significance in Chongming.

 

Xuegong, also known as Confucius Temple, is a place where ancient official schools were located and where Confucius was worshipped. Chongming Xuegong was first built in the fourth year of the Yuan Dynasty's Taiding period (1327) and was relocated several times with the county government. Chongming Xuegong is located at No. 696 Aoshan Road, Chengqiao Town, and was built in the second year of the Ming Dynasty's Tianqi period(1622), and it has a history of nearly 400 years. It now covers an area of 23.21 mu and has Ming and Qing dynasty architectural complexes such as the east and west archways, Lingxing Gate, Pan Pond, Dengyun Bridge, east and west official halls, halberd gate, the temple of famous officials, the temple of virtuous citizens, Dacheng Hall, east and west corridors, Zunjing Pavilion, Chongsheng Temple, Confucius school gate, ceremony gate, Minglun Hall, Xuehai Hall, the temple of loyalty and filial piety, the temple of Tang and Zhao, the temple of Shen Zhongjie, and Yingzhou Academy, which are magnificent and spectacular.

 

The Chongming District Museum is open to the public relying on Chongming Xuegong, with two basic exhibitions "History of Chongming Island" and "Chongming Folk Customs," as well as two permanent exhibitions "The Model for All Ages: The Life of Confucius" and "Good Local Scholars of Yingzhou." The "History of Chongming Island" exhibition uses cultural relics, models, sculptures, dioramas, and pictures to reflect the formation of Chongming Island and its development and construction achievements in various aspects such as politics, economy, transportation, and culture. The "Chongming Folk Customs" exhibition mainly reproduces the hard work and simple life of the people of Chongming through scenes such as towns and folk family rooms. In the temporary exhibition hall Minglun Hall, 5-6 temporary exhibitions are held every year.
