The puzzle map was invented by Tong Yegeng from Chongming in the late Qing Dynasty. From 1862 (the first year during the reign of Emperor Tongzhi), according to puzzle principle of "tangram", Tong Yegeng invented puzzle map. In 1875 (the first year of during the reign of Emperor Guangxu), he officially made the “Continuing Puzzle Map” (Volumes I and II), “Puzzle Map” (Volumes I and Volume II) and “Puzzle Map Thousand-character Classic” and completed printing. In the early 1910s, the fourth son Tong Sheng and the fifth son Tong Danian submitted “Puzzle Map” and Puzzle Map Thousand-character Classic” for registration at the Ministry of Agriculture, Industry and Commerce of the central government then. They obtained copyright and appraisal from the Ministry of Education. As one of educational toys, the Commercial Press officially published “Puzzle Map” and “Puzzle Map Thousand-Character Classic”, which soon gain nationwide popularity. 

 

Learning from previous skills, Tong Yegeng changed previous “tangram” into “Puzzle map”, which has pointed, oblique, curvy, straight, square, round objects made of wood. When working out puzzles, people can mutually use these wooden objects. Each picture (word) must be made up of 15 pieces. Amazingly, one piece cannot be added or reduced. People can put together landscapes, characters, utensils, flowers and fruits, fish and insects, birds and animals, utensils and pavilions and Chinese characters in the regular script, script, cursive script.
