The Chongming Domestic Waste Sorting Science Popularization Base has been completed and opened to the public free of charge. The base is a comprehensive environmental education venue integrating science popularization, interactive experience, practical education, and skills training. It innovatively adopts a full-chain popularization model of "theory + experience + practice" to help the concept of waste sorting take root in people's hearts, guiding residents from "passive awareness" to "active practice," and enabling green, low-carbon lifestyles to take root in Chongming.
At 9 am, walking into the Chongming Domestic Waste Sorting Science Popularization Base on the west side of Baojiang Highway, visitors see a display screen on the first floor showcasing the development history and achievements of waste sorting work in Chongming District. On-site docents answer visitors' questions and popularize sorting knowledge. Nearby, an intelligent timed and designated waste disposal station is on display, vividly presenting a new model of contactless, intelligent, and clean waste disposal, allowing everyone to experience up close the new changes in urban civilization brought about by intelligent and refined waste sorting.
"I've gained so much from this visit. The kinds of waste that are hard to identify or sort in daily life can all be learned here. The interactive games are also very interesting!" said a visiting resident.
Compared with the achievements display and theoretical popularization on the first floor, the second floor of the base focuses on fun interactive experiences, creating diverse immersive science popularization scenes. The venue has carefully set up special projects such as waste sorting motion-sensing games, a four-person sorting competition arena, a green cycling experience, carbon footprint calculation, and carbon inclusive science popularization displays. Through innovative formats such as fun games, data calculation, and interactive competitions, it breaks the limitations of traditional "one-way lecturing" and allows visitors to master sorting knowledge and deepen low-carbon awareness through fun interaction, truly achieving a shift from "passively listening" to "actively learning and hands-on practice."
Zhou He, general manager of Shanghai Zhengchuan Environmental Protection Co Ltd, introduced that the purpose of building this waste sorting science popularization hall is to create a platform for environmental learning for all. Targeting various groups such as ordinary residents, cleaning and sanitation workers, and school students, it popularizes basic knowledge of waste sorting and breaks down the entire waste treatment process, so that people can clearly understand "how to sort waste and where waste goes." Relying on visualized and participatory real-scene popularization, it promotes waste sorting and low-carbon environmental knowledge into public life, effectively enhancing public participation in waste sorting and ecological environmental literacy.
The science popularization base is grounded in Chongming's ecological development characteristics, uses local waste sorting practices as samples, and deeply integrates sorting knowledge, low-carbon actions, and the region's ecological development vision, creating a regular environmental education platform for the public that is knowable, perceptible, and participatory. At present, the Chongming Domestic Waste Sorting Science Popularization Base is open to the public free of charge. The specific opening hours are 8:30am–11:30am and 1pm–4pm on weekdays.
