A variety of activities have brightened up students' summer vacation. Recently, students from the summer schools of local universities have visited Chongming Island and entered the Chongming "Bubuying" Intangible Cultural Heritage Hall to immerse themselves in the wisdom of Chongming's intangible cultural heritage of handmade cloth.

　　Inside the Intangible Cultural Heritage Hall, various homespun cloth cultural and creative products are displayed in an orderly manner, with different colors and exquisite shapes. Twenty-two international students from Shanghai Dianji University, from 13 countries including the United Kingdom, Germany, and South Africa, were deeply attracted by these homespun cloth products. They carefully observed the handicrafts and carried out heated discussions, and even tried on homespun cloth clothing with great interest.

　　After witnessing the staff cranking the spinning wheel to spin cotton into thread and  the students became even more curious and eagerly tried the spinning facilities themselves.

　　“This is so difficult, you need to balance your hands and legs when weaving, which is very challenging,” said one international student.

　　This event was part of the "Outstanding Engineers" International Summer School series of courses at Shanghai Dianji University. It was organized with the assistance of the Chongming District Overseas Friendship Association. Shanghai City Ambassador Jiang Luyao, a Chongming native, also participated in the greeting and exchange sessions with the international students and introduced Chongming traditional cloth, through which she helped to promote traditional Chinese culture among international youth.

　　Jiang Luyao added: "As Shanghai's city ambassador, it is my responsibility and obligation to introduce Shanghai's intangible cultural heritage—Chongming homemade cloth—to friends around the world. I also hope that this kind of on-site visit can let more people know about this traditional craft that has been passed down for thousands of years."

　　As a well-known homemade cloth making experience base on the island, the "Bubuying" Intangible Cultural Heritage Hall saw a 20 percent increase of the number of visitors during the summer vacation compared to normal weekdays. In addition to daily visits, it also welcomes long-term in-depth study groups and workshops, allowing the general public and tourists to deeply appreciate the charm of Chongming homemade cloth and traditional textile techniques.
