Shanghai's Chongming district is set for a major transportation upgrade, with Metro Line 22, also known as the Chongming Line, expected to begin trial operations by the end of next year.

The update was announced at a news conference on the achievements of Shanghai's 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) held on Nov 19.

Once the new line enters service, it will significantly reduce travel times between Chongming and downtown Shanghai. By then, a trip from Chongming's Dongtan wetland to Pudong's Jinqiao area will take about 30 minutes, and passengers can reach People's Square in about one hour.

Chongming's connectivity will be further strengthened by the Shanghai–Chongqing–Chengdu High-Speed Railway, scheduled for completion in 2029.

Once in service, a trip from Chongming's Chengqiao town to Baoshan Railway Station will take about 20 minutes, and a journey to Hongqiao Railway Station 40 minutes.

Beyond rail development, Chongming has largely completed its "four horizontal and seven vertical" road network, upgrading 105 kilometers of major roads and improving rural roads across all townships.

Visitors can explore the 102-kilometer riverside loop on the southern bank of the Yangtze River, or see the picturesque Beiyan Road for its sweeping views.

The district is also advancing green mobility, having achieved full coverage of new-energy buses and taxis. Low-altitude logistics routes operated by JD Logistics are undergoing trial operations, contributing to an increasingly versatile "water–land–air" multimodal transport system.

As transport infrastructure expands, Chongming continues to strengthen its ecological profile, maintaining high environmental standards as it moves toward its goal of becoming a world-class ecological island.
