Kiwifruit harvest season begins at Chongming Island orchard

Autumn has arrived, and the summer heat is gradually receding. At Shanghai Huijie Fruit and Vegetable Professional Cooperative located in Xianqiao Village, Shuxin Town, the local kiwifruit has reached its ripening season, with fruits being harvested and sent to the market one after another. Known as the "king of fruits," the kiwifruit here is not only of superior quality but also maintains stable yields, attracting many citizens to come and experience the joy of picking.

 

Walking into the orchard, clusters of tan, fuzzy kiwifruits can be seen hanging from the vines, swaying in the wind like bells, creating a delightful scene of a bountiful harvest. Workers are busy picking the fruits, while many visitors stroll among the rows, carefully selecting their preferred kiwifruits. With a gentle twist of the hand, a plump kiwifruit falls into the basket. Song Qin, the person in charge of the cooperative, said: "When picking, choose fruits that are full-shaped and slightly yellowed on the skinsuch kiwifruits are of exceptional quality." She also reminds visitors that after picking, the kiwifruits can be stored directly at room temperature without refrigeration. They are best eaten when they feel slightly soft to the touch, which usually takes about five to six days.

 

The cooperative cultivates 120 mu of kiwifruit, primarily featuring four varieties: "Hongyang," "Xuxiang," "Jinkui," and "Haiyan," which cover green-fleshed, yellow-fleshed, and red-fleshed types to meet the taste preferences of different consumers. Among them, the earliest to ripen is "Hongyang," which has red flesh and is typically available until mid-September. "Xuxiang" begins to ripen in early September and remains available until around National Day. "Haiyan" usually starts ripening in mid-to-late September, while "Jinkui" is the latest-maturing variety, ripening just in time for National Day. Currently, the "Xuxiang" variety is at its peak harvesting periodplump, sweet, and juicy, it is deeply loved by consumers.
