Summer’s sweetest harvest: Chongming’s ‘Four Emerald" pears take center stage

As midsummer arrives, the air is filled with the intoxicating fragrance of ripe pears. Chongming’s Lvhua Town Agricultural Trade Company proudly presents its prized "Four Emerald" pears—Cuiyu, Cuicui, Cuiguan, and Cuihua—each boasting tender flesh, crisp sweetness, and abundant juice, marking the season’s first taste of summer’s bounty.
Cuiguan, crowned the "June Snow," reigns as the star of the quartet. With each fruit weighing around 500 grams, its crisp texture, 13-degree sweetness, and melt-in-your-mouth flesh have solidified its top status. Gu Chao, the company head, reveals a trade secret: the pear’s speckled "rust" isn’t a flaw but a sweetness indicator—the more spots, the higher the sugar content. Currently in peak harvest, Cuiguan will dominate markets through mid-to-late August.
The "Four Emeralds" each shine in their own right:
Cuiyu and Cuicui, the early birds, debuted in early July, selling over 2 tons across platforms with their signature precocious charm.
Cuihua, dubbed the "Qixi Honey" for its mid-August (Chinese Valentine’s Day) debut, develops richer flavors thanks to extended ripening, rivaling Cuiguan’s taste.
A farm manager shares insider wisdom: "Cuiguan’s thick skin grants it rare staying power—properly stored, it retains summer’s sweetness until New Year’s Day!"
Behind the scenes, science fuels the sweetness. Cuihua, bred by Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences, underwent five years of trials at Lvhua’s orchards. Tested against more than 10 varieties for disease resistance and yield stability, it’s now poised to go national, proving that the best fruits grow from both earth and innovation.
