The rise of space vegetables in Chongming agriculture

Space vegetables are ordinary vegetable seeds that are carried on space satellites, undergoing special environmental changes such as weightlessness and oxygen deficiency in space. This causes internal structural changes in the vegetable seeds. After returning to the ground, they are cultivated and grown into vegetables by agricultural experts. These vegetables are known for their good taste and high nutritional value. At the Shanghai Gaoze Xiangyuan Science Popularization Base located in Jianken Village, Jianshe Town, a variety of space vegetables are planted. Let's go and learn more about them.
Upon entering the base, you will see agricultural greenhouses are neatly arranged, and many "exotic" fruits and vegetables are growing on the branches and vines inside the greenhouses. Their size and shape differ from the fruits and vegetables we see in our daily lives.
"The appearance of space vegetables is quite different from that of ordinary fruits and vegetables. For example, 'space pumpkins' are several times larger than ordinary pumpkins, with thicker vines and larger leaves. For tourists who come to pick, it is a very novel experience," a staff member at the base told reporters. Currently, the base has planted a variety of space vegetables, including giant pumpkins, space tomatoes, giant beans, giant long loofahs, and more than ten other types of space vegetables, through planting experiments of various space vegetable varieties in the greenhouses.
"Unlike genetically modified foods, the new varieties of crops bred through space breeding do not have artificially implanted genes. They are safe and risk-free, and have higher nutritional value," the base staff said. "The 'space fruits and vegetables' varieties promoted by the base have been tested for two years and currently show advantages such as strong disease resistance, high yield, good quality, and excellent taste."
At present, the base is entering the harvest season for small tomatoes, and soon cucumbers, peppers, eggplants, pumpkins, and others will also mature successively. It is reported that in addition to being available for tourists to pick in the park, the base's fruits and vegetables will also be delivered to enterprises, schools, and other places, allowing more citizens to taste space vegetables.
