Due to continuous high temperatures for several days, Chongming local dragon fruit has matured and gone to the market. The dragon fruit base in Xianqiao Village, Shuxin Town has ushered in a bumper harvest. The mature dragon fruit looks plump and has tight and juicy flesh. The sweetness is over 20 degrees.

In the dragon fruit base, the reporter saw rows of long stems like cacti, with bright and plump dragon fruit hanging on them like red lanterns. Currently, the base has planted two varieties - “Red Crystal” and “Honey Treasure”. In terms of the shape, “Red Crystal” is oval, while “Honey Treasure” is round. Their flesh is soft, juicy and sweet.

The reporter learned that the cooperative began to introduce dragon fruits in 2014 but dragon fruits were not easy to plant. It is a kind of tropical fruit that is not cold-resistant. It needs to be protected from cold in winter. In addition, it blooms at night and needs artificial pollination overnight to increase the fruit setting rate. After years of exploration, the base has successfully produced high-quality dragon fruits.

Currently, the base mainly focuses on picking dragon fruits. The 10 acres of dragon fruits will mature in batches, and the picking time will last till the next New Year’s Day.
