The folk opera "Bitter Grass Disturbance" is an original play, which tells the story of a strong and brave Chongming girl Xiu Gu fighting against a villain in the village to protect her recipe for bitter grass cake. The plot is full of ups and downs. Finally, with the help of Yang Seyan, a folk lawyer, Xiu Gu recaptured the secret recipe for making bitter grass cake from the rogue and let him be punished.

The opera combines the three intangible cultural heritage protection projects of Chongming bitter grass, Yang Seyan's story, and Chongming folk song by singing Chongming folk opera tunes with Chongming dialect, which has strong cultural and artistic characteristics of Chongming.

Chongming folk opera is the general name of "folk songs" that are popular on Chongming Island. It was recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage project in 2021. In recent years, Chongming has attached great importance to the discovery, protection, and inheritance of Chongming folk songs, and the number of high-quality plays has been increasing, giving new vitality to the traditional culture.
