In September 2016, Shanghai decided to spare no efforts to support Chongming to build a world-class ecological island. Chongming has banned hunting in the whole district, set up a 24-hour reporting phone, and carried out the construction of Dongtan ecological restoration projects... With the implementation of various measures, a large number of wintering migratory birds have flown to Dongtan, and the number of rare national protected birds such as white headed cranes, swans, and black faced spoonbills has increased significantly.Biodiversity makes Dongtan also have important ecological value worldwide, so it is listed inthe World Natural Heritage Nomination Site of Phase II Migratory Bird Habitat in the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea of China. In 2023, Dongtan is likely to become the first world heritage site in Shanghai.

The increasing number of rare birds is one of the important signs of the improvement of the ecological environment in Chongming. In last March, researchers conducted a fish monitoring in the Yangtze River waters under the jurisdiction of Chongming.A large number of swordfish were caught in the net, which weighed 18 kg. This was impossible in previous years. Besides, the finless porpoise, the "panda in the water" that was once rare, also frequently appeared on the river. In the past two years, workers or citizens have found finless porpoises on the river near the Dongfeng Xisha Reservoir for several times.

Long before the ten-year fishing ban of the Yangtze River was fully launched, Chongming had begun to ban fishing. Since August 2018, the handling of certificates for fishing vessels in the Yangtze River has been stopped, and 179 fishing vessels in the Yangtze River have all withdrawn from production in the Yangtze River waters. By the end of 2018, it was the first to realize the full withdrawal of fishing vessels in the country. Standing at the estuary of the Yangtze River, Chongming bid farewell to the Yangtze River fishing and shoulder the important task of repairing the ecological environment of the Yangtze River.
