Chongming Boasts 8 Geographical Indication Trademarks

The reporter has recently learnt from Chongming District Market Supervision Bureau that so far, there have been 8 geographical indication trademarks in Chongming among the 17 ones in Shanghai, ranking top one citywide.

It is introduced that geographical indication trademark indicates the origin of some commodity and its specific quality, reputation and other characteristics determined by the natural or humanity factors in the area. Geographical indication trademark can stimulate the development of local economy, especially economic benefit of agricultural products, whose price is generally higher than that without geographical indication trademark by 20%. Geographical indication trademark can not only facilitate the products' quality and increase farmers' incomes, but also can effectively protect characteristics of local high-quality commodity and propel the development of distinctive agriculture.

In 2007, Cnongming reported 6 geographical indication trademarks, such as "Chongming Soft Taro" and "Chongming Golden Melon". In recent two years, Chongming District Market Supervision Bureau has boosted cultivation of geographical indication trademark, continuously dug out brand resources of agricultural products and guided to declare geographical indication trademark in all aspects. "Chongming Rice" and "Chongming Boxwood" successfully passed the application for two geographical indication trademarks with influence in 2019 and 2020 respectively, which enhanced related products' added value efficiently.

Currently, Chongming has eight geographical indication trademarks, including Chongming Soft Taro, Chongming White Haricot, Chongming Golden Melon, Chongming White Goats, Chongming Hairy Crab, Chongming Rice, Chongming Narcissus and Chongming Boxwood, and two Products of Geographical Indication Protection, such as Chongming Old Liquor and Chongming Hairy Crab. Those products are fairly popular among citizens for excellent quality.

In order to further strengthen the publicity of Chongming geographical indication and push up the impact of agricultural product brands, Chongming District Market Supervision Bureau set up the publicity board for Chongming narcissus in "Chongming Narcissus Garden" of Flower Expo Zone during the 10th China Flower Expo, enabling visitors to vividly have a knowledge of the cultural connotation of "Chongming Narcissus" geographic indication. Moreover, the geographical indication boards for advertising are also put in 16 hotels that undertake the reception task of the Flower Expo with the purpose of selling products with geographical indication in the hotels, making geographical indication known by more people and turning Chongming geographical indication more influential.

At present, Chongming District Market Supervision Bureau is promoting the declaration of two geographical indication trademarks, say, "Chongming Saffron" and "Chongming Bitter Grass".

It is reported that Chongming District Market Supervision Bureau will continue to publicize, promote and utilize geographical indications in cooperation with the Agricultural and Rural Committee, fully take advantage of the impetus of geographical indications on brand construction of regional agricultural products and boost added value of Chongming agricultural products to develop Chongming agricultural industry.
